Martin-O'Neil Cancer Center
Laura Schmitz, RD, CSO, Registered Dietitian
As one of only 42 board-certified specialists in oncology nutrition in California, she is uniquely trained to help cancer patients with their special dietary needs.
Laura advises patients on nutrition and meal planning based on an individual assessment she conducts at the beginning of cancer treatment. She then follows up with patients, as needed, to monitor their nutritional status while they are undergoing cancer treatment.
Nutritional counseling can include education regarding ways to optimize nutrition and manage side effects during and following cancer treatment, as well as supplement use, weight maintenance and the identification of community resources such as free meal programs for cancer patients.
Most recently, Laura worked as a clinical dietician at Queen of the Valley Medical Center. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Central Washington University and a bachelor of science degree in dietetics from Eastern Michigan University. She is a board-certified specialist in Oncology Nutrition through the Commission of Dietetic Registration and is a member of the American Dietetic Association and Oncology Dietetic Practice Group.
